01How much data do you need?
Check your current usage first. Video streaming and tethering usually use more data than messaging or browsing. A larger allowance is not automatically better if it raises the total cost.
Useful checks
- Review the last three bills or device usage
- Allow for occasional travel or hotspot use
- Check speed caps and fair-use conditions
02Understand the total contract cost
Multiply the monthly amount by the minimum term, add upfront charges, and read any in-contract price-change clause. Where device finance is separate, calculate both parts.
Useful checks
- Upfront payment
- Monthly airtime and device amounts
- Activation, delivery or exit fees
03Check coverage properly
Coverage maps are estimates. Performance can vary indoors, outdoors, by building materials, congestion, device and location.
Useful checks
- Home, work and regular travel routes
- Indoor calling and data needs
- Any trial or cooling-off arrangements
04Contract length and cancellation
Long terms may spread costs but can reduce flexibility. Check the minimum period, notice requirements, early termination charges and what happens after the minimum term.
05Roaming and international use
Do not assume overseas use is included. Check eligible destinations, fair-use limits, daily charges, excluded services and how to prevent unexpected bills.
06Keeping your mobile number
Number transfers normally require information from your existing provider. Confirm the exact transfer process and avoid cancelling the old service too early unless instructed.
